The following schedule is to help pupils with their planning for Hockey in 2012.

P5 and P6 Hockey Boys train on Tue and Thur.
P3 and P4 Hockey Boys and all Girls will train on Fri and (Mon starting from term 2 onwards).

Venue: School Hockey Pitch (top floor of Indoor Sports Hall, to meet at PE room first)
Time: 3pm to 5.30pm. (pupils who have supplementary can go straight to the pitch at 3.30pm)

Junior Team finishes 3rd at Nationals

After a very long drawn out season, we are proud of our Jr boys for finishing 3rd and the National Jr Champiomships. The team was disappointed not to have reached their target of retaining the title we had held for 2 consecutive years but based on the level of competition and the fact that the eventual winners, St.Andrew's Jr Sch were in inspiring form, the team is blessed to have finish in the top four. We are proud of the boys' achievement.

Jr Hockey Boys begin their Tournament

The National Jr tournament is a 6 aside format. Played on a half pitch, the game is fast and furious. Our Jr boys have started their campaign to retain the Jr National Champs title for the 3rd consecutive time. They have done well in the group stage and the quarterfinals stage beckons.

SHPS First Girls Hockey team

St.Hilda's Primary fielded its first Girls team at the Nationals. Though they many have not won any games due the experience levels, the team did well in having a strong spirit and determination to do their best at each game. Many of the girls are in Primary 4 and 3 so playing against opponents who were mainly in P5 was an eye opener for them. We are proud of their efforts and they will only get better from here.

Our Jr hockey teams have been training hard for the upcoming Nationals.

We hope for a top tw finish in the coming National tournament. It won't be easy with school like St.Andrews, Punggol and Xishan all traditionally strong and looking to achieve a similar result. We wish the boys all the best for the competitions.

P5 Camp 2011

Our Hockey team woke up on Monday and checked in at SHPS for their 3 day hockey camp. The camp's main objective is to prepare the players for the upcoming National Jr Championships occuring in 2 weeks time. Both the boys and girls teams will be competing and this camp will bring together the players and teach them teamwork, tactics and values. The players have had nice meals, great fun and tiring trainings all packed into the three days. We also had time on Monday to watch two Asia Cup games in the evening. The players were treated to an 18-0 mauling of Khazahktan by Pakistan and a 1-1 draw by Korea and Malaysia.

All in all it has been a great time for our team.

Our hockey girls first tournament

Our hockey girls played in their first competition today. The East Zone carnival for Jr Girls has established sides like Chongzheng Pri and Pasir Ris Primary so the girls had very tough opponents. Our main aim was to get some valuable exposure playing a competitive game and learning how to get into good positions. The girls did extremely well by our standards as we only starting playing 3 months ago and a lot work is still required.

We will put in a lot of hard work to prepare for the Nationals in July. For now, the girls have gotten a taste of what a hockey competition looks like and we hope they will be hungry for success.

National Champs once more

Our Hockey boys have done the school proud with another National title. Some of these boys have done the treble by winning two Jr titles and this Senior title over the last three years.

The final was a played at a tremendously high tempo with both teams having chances to score. St.Andrews came out of the starting blocks on fire attacking and pressing the St.Hilda's defence. The two teams went into the half with no goals scored. After the break, the boys had more attacking opportunities arising from quick work on the right by Marcus Ooi and Dillon Cheng who both caused problems for the SA defenders. It was only in the 4th quarter with 4 minutes left on the clock that Marcus manage to get into the D and cross the ball for Amir Foo to tap between the keepers legs for the match winning goal. The spectators roared in delight for what look like the match winner. The last 4 minutes were the longest in my life as a coach/manager and we are truly proud of this team who truly deserve their victory. Congrats boys!

A big thank you to all our supporters who dressed for the occassion! The coaches felt the Man of the Match was Benedict. He had a masterclass performance. The team also deserve to be appluaded for their great team spirit.

Hockey Finals at Sengkang 19th April

Our Hockey boys made it to the National Senior Boys final and will play St.Andrews. Both sides boast good players and it will be great final to watch. Do come down to Sengkang on the 19th April, Tuesday at 4pm to watch this epic battle.

The Senior Boys team has made it to the National Hockey semifinals. We play Xishan Primary on tuesday 12/4 at Sengkang Stadium. All the best to our boys.

SHPS vs Park View

Our boys emerge 4-0 winners in a very tight defensive game. The first half saw us get the ball into the D many times but we fail to convert our chances. A 1-0 scoreline reflected a stubborn Park View defence which would not allow SHPS players to convert their chances. The second half much of the same for the 3rd quarter but we came alive in the last quarter to score the 3 goals. The boys learnt to play a faster game which is what they are good at.

SHPS vs Radin Mas

The first game of the season began last Thursday with SHPS playing a strong Radin Mas team. The opponents had some individual players who has good skill and made it difficult for us to penetrate. However, with some very good work from Bazil and Dillon, the team got some good moves down the right and the two goals came quickly in the first half. The Radin Mas team pile on the pressure and pull one back in the 3rd quarter. Nerves began to set in but our boys were rewarded in the last few minutes with another goal to seal the tie.

Day 3 in KL

The day started on a wet note as huge clouds covered the skies of Kuala Lumpur. The boys were still in high spirits but most were feeling the effects of playing so many games the day before. We got off to a slow start with the other team scoring after a mistake by our defenders however constant pressure on the opponents half was rewarded by a penalty flick which Marcus Lee put away quite easily.

The second half started in similar fashion with our team pressing them again and we were rewarded with a second penalty flick, however the pressure to score fell on our Captain's shoulders. He fail to put the penalty away but nevertheless he went on to fight hard again in midfield. The whole tour he has been an inspiration to his peers and he vows to take another penalty again when the opportunity arises. The match ended with the opponents capitalising on the team's tiredness from the previous games. No excuses though, the team has learnt a lot from the mistakes made and lessons learnt throughout the 3 days.

We headed back to Singapore soon after with the wealth of experience gained and a successful games tour completed. Now on to the Nationals! God bless boys.

Day 2 in KL

We had an amazing day playing hockey at Tun Razak Hockey Stadium. The boys played a mixed club team from the Projects. We won 3-2. There was a lot to learn from our game which Mr Fred explained to the boys during their breaks.

Our second game against St.John's pit us against a strong side with older players with great skill. Our boys held their own and we drew the game 1-1. Lunch saw the boys head to the nearby Tennis Club cafeteria for some pasta and chicken. They gobbled up everything and promptly headed off to some much needed rest at the stadium.

The last game in the evening was against again a St.John's team comprising of younger players during the first half and an older, more experienced team in the second. Our boys lost with a respectable 3-1 scoreline of which all of their 3 goals being scored in the second half. A good result given the age of the other team.

We had dinner at a Thai Restraunt. Again the boys did us proud by finishing everything on their plates. They had a huge appetite after such a long day of acitivity.

Overall it has been a great experience and our boys are looking forward to some important rest so they can complete their games tour on a high note tomorrow.

KL Trip first day

The boys have reached Kuala Lumpur for their Hockey Games tour. The trip up was smooth with a lunch stop in Melaka. We reached the stadium and started warming up only to have the rain come and end the hopes of playing our first game. That did not dampen out moods as we proceeded to have an early dinner and back to the hotel room for some tactics. The boys will then be off to an early night as they face three teams tomorrow.

We welcome a new group of talented pupils to our hockey family. This year, we are starting a girls team and hope more will join the CCA in the coming weeks.

The P4 and P5 players also got a chance to see their new home ground. Training in their new facility was an exciting affair for both teachers and players.

St.Hilda's Primary Pitch in the Sky

Our dream home has finally be completed. St.Hilda's Primary presents the Pitch in the Sky. Here is a sneak peak of the facility our hockey teams will now be using. Together with St.Hilda's Sec, we intend to build a lasting legacy of competitive teams and promote the sport of hockey. We really give thanks to God for his blessing upon the school and the many donations that have poured in to fund the project. We continue to seek for support to reach the targets set by the secondary school for their PRIME project.

Our boys will start using the pitch on the 4th Nov. We are also starting the P3 girls team. All in all it is exciting times for the school. Go Forward!

SHPS Jr Hockey Boys successfully defend title

Our Hockey boys have retained their National Jr Hockey Title in style yesterday. They beat St.Andrew's 3-2 with a golden goal to seal one of their most important victories in our 8 year history. St.Andrew's took the game into extra time with a goal in the last quarter of the game. However, the boys prevail in their quest to retain their title with a wonderful taken Golden Goal to seal their victory. We salute our young heros who fought hard throughout the game. A big thank you to all our supporters from Mrs Chong our Principal to the teachers who came and also our pupils who created an atmosphere for the finals. To God be the Glory.

Our Jr Hockey boys beat Radin Mas 3-2 in the quarters, then went on to record a nice win over Punggol in the semis. Now they are at their last hurdle in the championship, the FINALS. We salute our P5 team made up of 10 boys who are playing their best hockey. Do come and support them on Monday at Delta Sports Complex. Their game is at 4pm.

Our P6 Boys made it to the National Finals this year. Though we lost to a very good Punggol side, the boys overall performance will be remembered for their never-say-die attitude. We salute the team of P6 boys with some P5 boys who made this year's team such a success. Special mention to Jun Wei the goalkeeper who made some fine saves for the team. We hope for more success as our boys continue to make St.Hilda's Pri famous for its hockey.

Hockey Games Tour at KL

Day 4

The boys completed their last game this morning with a 2-1 win over their opponents. All in all, it has been a tremendous effort by our team and we want to thank the 3 teachers Mr Fred, Mr Zakie and Mr Lim for their efforts in bringing the kids up to KL.

Day 3

Our boys played two games again today. We lost narrowly 2-3 but won the other one 2-1. They have done well and are in high spirits.

Day 2

The boys played two games today. Won the 1st game 4-1 while they drew 0-0 in their second one. Based on Mr Zakie's report, they have been playing very well and they will continue to work hard for the next few games. No injuries and all is well. Good job boys!

How to hit a ball?

Our P4 boys have been training hard and yesterday we showed some of them how to hit an ball.

Here are some pointers for each video you are about to watch.

NICE HIT BUT HANDS APART
This player has a good hit but needs to keep his hands close together. Both hands must be touching when you are gripping the stick. If the hands are slightly apart, the stick cannot generate the force required for a good hit. You may be able to hit the ball but it may not be powerful enough or accurate enough. He has good hand eye coodination though.

FOLLOW THROUGH
This player is keeping his eye on the ball. He has good contact but needs to learn to follow through for maximum power on his shot.

STICK IS HEAVY, CHOKE UP
This boy needs a lighter stick. To solve his problem, he can grip the stick slightly higher in order to take the wieght off the stick. In comparison with his height, he will find it easier to handle the stick and control his shot.

P6 boys at RI

Our P6 hockey boys got a chance to play hockey at RI's hockey turf yesterday in a U-12 tournament. The boys were also treated to a grand tour of the school conducted by our ex-player Hasvhir Singh who manage to get to RI on a DSA. We are proud of him as he will continue to uphold our tradition of producing fine young boys both on the pitch and off it. The boys did not win the competition but took away some valuable lessons in teamwork and areas for improvement at our next training session.

We were taken on a tour of the sports facilities available to the students of RI and also shown a video on what it means to be a Rafflesian. We hope more boys will aspire to work towards getting into good schools such as Victoria and Raffles in the future.

P3 & P4 Boys doing SHPS proud again

The East Zone Centre Of Excellence organised a 3-aside tournament for the entire zone. 5 schools turn up to play a round-robin format with 4 teams from each school playing simultaneously on 4 pitches to give the school a combined tally and score for each game. As such, 20 boys got a chance to play at various points throughout the day. Our boys, comprising of P3 and P4 players came in 1st after winning all their matches. It was a perfect day for them as they showed very strong team spirit. We want them to continue winning medals for themselves and honouring the school with their victories. Keep up the good work boys!!

CHAMPIONS AGAIN

We are truly proud of our Hockey boys for winning another National Championship for the school. Their win was a hard fought one as St.Andrew's Primary played very well too. The game , which ended with a final score of 2-2 in normal time, had to be settled on penalties. Our goalkeeping hero Jun Wei saved 4 penalties to give St.Hilda's its second National title. To God be the glory.

Finals here we come!

Our boys have made it to the National Finals again. Its going to be an All Saints affair as St.Andrew’s Pri boys will meet us to decide this year’s Junior Boys National Hockey Champions. Our Semifinal game was won by 3 goals. We beat Chongzheng through goals scored by Asaad, Marcus and Elias. The boys have to be commended on playing wonderfully so far. They have one more hurdle to clear and must be at their best again to be crowned champions. We know St.Andrew’s has a good team so it will be an intriguing final.

Jr Hockey Boys @ Nationals

Our Jr Boys team has played 2 games so far in their prelimanary round. They beat Punggol 1-0 and Rivervale 3-0. There is still alot to do to make it to the top four at the Nationals but we have utmost confidence in this team. IT comprises of a mixture of P4 and P5 boys with varying abilities. However, the team is playing well in all positions and we look forward to more success at this years Nationals. Go St.HIlda's!!

Jr Boys Hockey Camp

Our P4 and P5 players had a Hockey camp in June. The bonding during the camp was graet and we have found our 1st 20 players for the tournament. The boys trained hard and had a great time listening to tactics from Mr Fred during our night sessions. We have a good team this year comprising of P4 and P5 players. Competition for places was so keen that some good players had to be left out due to the limit on the number of players for the Nationals.

Our boys are playing in a strong group wich includes last years Champions, Punggol.

Hockey World Cup News

Truly my best 2 weeks of the holidays. Watching top teams like Holland and Germany show what international hockey standards look like has been nothing short of amazing. Their players showed the world how skillful and mentally strong you have to be to play at the highest level. The last 2 games I watched last Friday had Argentina playing Pakistan for 5th and 6th place while Holland beat New Zealand for a place in the final.

The Pakistani's played to their coaches tactics and manage to win the game comfortably. The Dutch on the other hand seem to have a difficult 1st half. They look a totally listless for the first half and many thought it might be a night for an upset when New Zealand took the lead through Simon Child's solo run and beautifully finished chip over the keeper. However, the Dutch masters, who have been superb this tournament have shown some true grit in the face of adversity. Their whole team is built on discipline and belief in their coaches tactics. A slight change of pace was detected and the whole game changed in the 2nd half. 2 beautifully worked short corners and a well worked goal from open play made them favourites again to lift the title this year. How I wished the final was being played here...

More Hockey World Cup Action

Mr Vai brought 4 boys to watch the Hockey World Cup at Sengkang on Thursday. Holland played India and Germany played Australia. The Dutch team held their nerves and won 3-2 in the end while the Germans and Aussies drew 1-1. Asaad, Dillion, Bazil and Iskandar were joined by Luther and his brother Isaac P while Marcus and Rohan were brought by their parents. The experience was great as the boys got some basic advice from Mr Fred on how to improve their games.

Holland beat India 3-2 even after going down 1-0 in a few minutes. Their short corners were so well executed. So far, all the teams have been fantastic. More news on our trips to the Jr World Cup soon.

Andrews Carnival

Our P4 and P5 players came in 2nd at the end of 4 days of hockey. The quandrangle which was organised by Saint Andrews has been a great success. Saint teacher Mdm Nisa did a great job organising the competition and our boys ended up playing SA in the finals. We lost 3-1 to a good team. Considering some of our boys were playing in a competition for the 1st time, they held a good account of themselves. The tournament also served as a warm up for the coming Nationals in July. We hope that we will meet SA in the finals for another All Saints affair again.

Andrews Carnival

We have been invited to participate in the Andrew's Carnival comprising of 4 teams over the next 4 days. This quandangle consist of St.Andrews Pri, Canberra Pri,Teck Whye Sec (girls) and us. Today we played SAJS and emerge 2-1 winners. Both goals set up by Asaad and finish off by Marcus in a simple worked wing play. The boys learnt a lot of lessons on the field especially for those P4 boys who were playing a full pitch game for the first time.

Our next game is against Teck Whye Girls. The girls are 6 aside champions in their category so by no means are they push overs. Our boys need to go into this game with the same tenacity as they did against the SAJS boys. Tune in for more tomorrow...

Hockey World Cup

The Mens Jr Hockey World Cup has come to our shores. Yesterday, some of our boys witness Singapore play traditional powerhouse, Holland. The stadium was a sea of Orange and Red fans cheering their teams on. Mr Fred and Mr Vai brought a couple of hockey boys to witness their 1st international game. The hockey that was displayed was certainly of a high level and everyone was treated to some fanciful skill and professional play. The other game saw Japan draw 1-1 against South Africa. Our Jr Hockey boys are East Zone Champs

It was an exciting 2 days of hockey carnival style. We had to play 5 schools over 2 days for the East Zone Hockey title. The boys completed the tournament in style when they finish 7-0 winners in their last game. They played with a lot of passion and made sure they put their best foot forward for every game. The team comprised of 20 P4 and P5 players. Captained by Elias, who was inspirational with his movement with the ball, the team played to their coach's plan. Players like Asaad and Thomas were pillars in the team. Thomas even played through injury which showed how much he wanted to win it with the team. All the boys should be commended for doing our school proud. The next task, a 3 aside competition on Sat and a 4 school tournament called Andrews Carnival in June. Go get them boys.

P4 boys get a taste of pitch training

Our P4 hockey boys started training today at Victoria School. The pitch there is a synthetic turf and the boys got a taste of the vastness of a full size field. Training for both P4 and P5 players have started to intensify as they prepare for the upcoming Nationals in July.

Loss to Saints

It was an all Saints affair today. Our sister school, Saint Andrews won 3-0. They played a good game. St.Hilda's did their best to counter the attacking play but alas it was not enough to prevent the better team from winning. Our boys go away from the game with much learnt and a better understanding of not giving up even after going 2 goals down. A good spirit and correct attitude for all teams that may be at a losing end sometimes. We still have two games to go and the boys are going to fight their way to the end. They look forward to meeting their next opponents Pasir Ris Primary.

Nationals have begun

Our P6 boys kick start their National tournament by winning the first game against Chongfu. It was a close game and they won it 1-0. Issac Pereira scoring the lone goal for the team. The next game saw us pit our skills against Hougang Primary. Hougang was the better team winning 2-1. Our boys fought hard being 2-0 down due to some bad mistakes on our part and came back to score the consolation goal. All is not lost as we have to win our remaining matches if we want to see ourselves progress further in the competition.

P2 Hockey Begins!!

Our P2 pupils have begun their journey to playing hockey. They started their first session. 28 boys and 1 girl make up our young trainees. Here are some pictures of their 1st day.

Report on Games Tour

Kuala Lumpur - The school, Project KL U-13, is made up of the best players from the different schools in KL. The team indeed gave our boys a hard fight. We scored an early goal in the first 3 mins of the game and was losing 3-1 right up till the final 20 mins. We eventually lost the game 3-2 but Fred was pleased with the performance of the team as they were up against a strong opponent.

Later in the evening, we played against Project Bangsarian. The team consisted of U-12 players and also seemed like a tough team to beat. Indeed, we started the game struggling and throughout most of the game. We were losing 2-0 till the final 20 mins of the game when we caught up with two goals in under 10 mins. The final score was 2-2 and Fred was rather pleased with the boys’ performance for the day. - Report done by Mr Edwin Lim

KL Hockey Games Tour

Our P6 team is now currently in KL taking part in 5 friendlies over the 4 days they are there. They left last Friday afternoon with our coach Mr Fred and teachers in-charge, Mr Edwin and Mr Zakie. The boys were excited about playing strong competition and will come back stronger from the experience. Here are some pictures of them so far.

SHPS vs SMK Tinggi Setapak
Realized that the players were U-13. Some of the boys were much taller and definitely more skillful than ours. Our boys weren’t playing their best and as usual, Fred advised them on what strategies to take. Our boys put up a brave fight but lost 6-0. Special mention was given to Gerald, who was very brave, as he had to face the bigger boys. He is definitely a more mature player now. We returned to the hotel and Fred talked further about useful strategies with the boys and they were ready to take on the players from the evening match.

SHPS vs SK Bandar Baru Sri Petaling

The players were clearly from the same age group and our boys’ confidence is displayed in this game. The boys scored an early goal against their opponents and held them at 1-0 till the end. It wasn’t an easy game as well but the boys remembered what Fred had told them. Special mention was given to Khairuldanial, who was spotted as a skillful player despite his size, by the coaches and teachers from the opposing team. He performed well today.

It was a memorable day as the SHPS boys had won their first overseas game. The boys were then rewarded with dinner at their favourite Malaysian fast food joint, Hartz Chicken Buffet in Berjaya Times Square, where they also celebrated Zakie’s birthday.

Top hockey nations to compete in Singapore in Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup Feb. 16

Singapore will host nine top hockey nations with former champions Australia, Germany and India headlining the list of illustrious teams coming to its shores when the 9th Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup group stages takes place during 7-21 June 2009.
The other countries include traditional hockey powerhouse Netherlands, who last finished 4th in 1993, New Zealand, Poland, Chile, Japan and South Africa.

Pride of the team

Mahes and Jerythym are off to Australia with the U-12 Combined Schools Hockey Team. They were selected from a group of 50 players who came down for trials in June. The 2 boys worked hard to prove they deserve to be included in the list for Australia. They will prepare with 12 other players to play against teams at the Pacific School Games in Canberra, Australia, from 28 November 2008 to 7 December 2008. These will include schools from Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the pacific region. God bless the boys on their journey.

Jr Boys end their campaign at the Nationals

We salute our Jr Boys for their galant effort at the Nationals this year. They were knocked out of the tournament by a good team. St.Andrews Primary sealed our fate when they beat us 1-0 at our last game of the prelimanary round. We looked back at missed chances during the other games but we must be proud of our boys efforts. They had tough opponents who deserve to be in the next round based on their excellent performances. Our boys can also hold their heads up high and look forward to another try next year. What a game! SHPS 2 JW 1

Our Jr boys played their first National Championship game today. We played Jurong West in our first game of the qualifiers. Both teams started off on par and our boys seem a little nervous in the beginning. Some mistakes in the 1st half got the coaches a little mad at their lack of effort in the middle of the field. After a very important half-time briefing, the boys were sent out into the game again. The introduction of Asaad was a wise move as suddenly the game opened up and the boys had more penetration. However the unthinkable happen. After 4 or 5 attacks, the Jurong West team broke out of their half and manage to get the ball into our D. Almost as if time stop, the ball was struck pass our keeper as he tried his best to kick it. The keeper later realise his mistake of not covering the post. The defenders also reflected that more could have been done by them to get he ball out of the D. Some of the defenders were not following the instructions about pushing the ball out in such a situation. As such, more rain and thunder fell from the sky in the form of angry coaches.

The boys look shaken. The final quarter whistle signalled the start of our last 10 minutes to salvage something from the game. Mr Fred reminded the boys that anything can happen in ten minutes. It only depended on the boys and how much they wanted to score a goal as a team. More instructions were barked on to the team and the pace intensified. Our boys showed the 3 days of camp and the overseas tour they went for made a difference as their fitness in the last 10 minutes became a factor.

Asaad hit a great ball into the D and Isaac P swung his stick and hit a beautiful shot towards the goal. GOAL!! It was a well deserved equaliser. The coaches were elated but reminded the boys that there was some more focus required. Within a few more plays, the ball was in our possession when suddenly we got a break from Khai who broke past 3 players to send a telling cross towards Issac again. This time the striker stopped it and with the next touch he sent an unstoppable shot past the keeper sending all the supporters, players and even our coaches into a frenzy of joy. Literally a second later, the umpires whistled to signal the end of the game. It was a final second goal. Amazing stuff from a team that was behind with only 10 minutes left on the clock. The boys really deserve all the credit for fighting all the way to the end. More importantly, the are reminded that the team perserverance and determination were key learning points from this game. Not forgetting Jurong West boys who were worthy opponents who played exceptionally well too. We salute their efforts.

P5 Hockey Camp 2008

This years camp for the Junior team held at Victoria has been really fun. The players have had a taste of tough training with 2 sessions a day over 3 days. The camp ends tomorrow but just thought I'd share with you some of the training pictures taken this morning. We also got to meet many of our boys who made it to Victoria via DSA. They have grown both physically and skillfully. Our boys have gain a lot from the coach and the older boys tips on some basic skills. Enjoy and look forward to more in the future.

Focus and hard work will pay off in improved skill by each player. Teamwork is achieved via playing together, helping each other with day to day hockey duties and at our annual camps. Perserverance is displayed when playing difficult teams, especially when the team has to come from behind to win the game.

A Job Well Done

Our Senior Boys team completed their National Tournament with a 3rd place finish. Their journey ended last Friday, 18/4/08 at Delta Stadium where it was an all Saints Final. St.Andrews Junior played our boys and it was a close game. The boys won 1-0 with a beautifully worked goal by Rudi from a layoff from Tarmizi. We like to salute all the boys in their galant efforts this year. Every player played a part in the team's success. The boys also have Mr Edwin Lim to thank for all his encouragement he provided througout the tournament. Every game, Mr Lim prepared the documents, the gear and dutifully informed parents of the necessary arrangements for the boys. His greatest contribution cannot be mentioned here but he is truly a blessing to the school. Our coach, Mr Fred Martins is also another key factor for the boys progress. His tactics and team strategies helped the boys play to their strengths and the team benefited tremendously from these game plays. Most of all, we thank God for His ever presence with team throughout their preparation. To God be the glory.

Senior boys to play for 3rd or 4th place.

It was a hard fought game. With both sides playing 40minutes of normal time, 10 more minutes of sudden death and another painful penalty flicks to decide the Senior boys semifinals. We gave it our very best but Tanjong Katong won the flicks. The boys did our school proud and now have the 3rd and 4th place game to look forward to on Friday. We wish Tanjong Katong all the best for the finals and hope they also get to win it and bring more glory to the East Zone.

Hockey Games Tour to Kuala Lumpur

Last week, the SHPS hockey team had the privilege to go to Kuala Lumpur for a 3 day games tour. We played 4 teams and learnt a lot from the experience. Our Jr Boys come in 4th

After a long tournament, our P5 mixed with some P4 boys have come in 4th in the Jr Division tournament. We are proud of their achievements as they managed to finish in the top 4 of the National tournament. Last year, their seniors won this tournament so much was expected of this team. However, each team has its own strengths and every tournament is different. our opponents also deserved much of the credit for making it such a keen competition. We allowed some P4 players to join the team to give them some experience and many of them have shown off their skills. All the traditionaly strong schools have improved and this made the competition very tough. The more important thing learnt from the competition by the boys is that through discipline and teamwork they can accomplish a lot. Keep working hard boys and study hard too!!

Through to the Semifinals

The Jr Hockey boys made it to the semifinals. It was a hard fought victory as the team beat Chongfu 1-0. Goal scorer, Mahesvaran sealed the victory after a well worked pass with his teammates. Chongfu put up a good fight and had some chances to even up the score. However, the defence held out for the narrow win and now we will have to prepare a semifinal showdown with either Punggol or St Andrews Pri both equally strong teams.

JR Boys Hockey Camp

In preparation for the upcoming Jr National tournament, our P4 and P5 hockey boys spent 3 days at the combined VS-SHPS camp. We stayed in Victoria and trained all the way at NIE hockey pitch. Everyone trained hard and had sunburn to show for their efforts. Apart from the scorching heat, the boys were put through a vigorous training programme from 8am to 5pm. Lunch and dinner time were popular moments as the boys were hungry from their long hours on the training ground.

Teachers such as Mr Edwin, Mr Aidil and Mr Vai also had sunburn to show for their efforts in getting the kids prepared for the coming tournament. Some P4 boys have also been earmarked to represent their school for the competition. We are looking forward to seeing them in action in a weeks time when they play Canberra Primary. Congrats P5 Boys

Our P5 boys came in 2nd in the Jr Floorball National Finals. What an achievement for our boys who are more hockey inclined then floorball. The boys beat some strong teams to reach the finals. Some of these teams have their own floorball rink which is essential for training. As such, we are very happy for the team to have made it so far in the tournament. Three cheers for them. Hip Hip Hooray x 3!!

December Hockey Camp

Our P6 boys underwent a Hockey camp at Victoria School last December. The camp was memorable for the intense training sessions(twice a day) as well as our times of fellowship especially the good food we had. The boys also got to train alongside boys from Victoria who act as mentors for our players. This partnership has gone on for many years and we are truly grateful to the school for their hospitality. Our ex-boys were asked to come join us for a reunion too and here are some of our photos.

P4 Boys in Action at Funkey 2007

The programme has been much anticipated by our young players. 32 boys signed up for this fun programme that is based on the highly recommended Hockey Developmental model for young players. This programme is the first step for our players before they embark on training to represent the school at National Competitions.

We have seen the success of this programme in our numerous achievements over the last 3 years. Since embarking on the journey, the school has won the National Junior Hockey Tournament in 2006. The boys who won the competition underwent the FUNKEY programme in2005. Another group who attended the same programme, won the P4 pre-juniors tournament last year too. The programme really addresses the need for schools to revisit their roles in developing young pupils for competition. We really advocate all our players undergo this basic training.

Horst Wein, a well-known German university lecturer with coaching assignments in 51 countries, has always been convinced that one way of promoting the game of hockey and persuading more youngsters to take up the sport is, to make the practise of hockey more enjoyable, attractive and from the learning point of view more effective!

Few children relish hours of boring practice, but if ones make the training pleasant and easily understood for the teacher and the young players and furthermore one combines it with a stimulating variation of different competitions which are considering the actual level of physical and mental capacities of the children, that’s a different proposition.

Wein, having learnt through his intensive travelling that many countries still use inadequate methods in youth hockey, believes that he is able to solve their big problem. He looked at the way subjects like mathematics or languages are taught progressively in schools and thought the same principles could be applied to the teaching of team sports.

Wein believes that all things in nature have a gestation period and must progress through a natural sequence until reaching maturity. Natural learning in any team sport should work the same way ! The step-by-step approach is one of the keys to success in his model, which uses the brain’s innate ability to make memory-building connections. Each accomplishment is broken down into a series of small steps, gradually and methodically leading to the final goal, the mastering of the 11-a-side game.

First the young players from 7 years onwards are exposed to a program of “ Games for developing basic skills and capacities“. Once the youngsters have mastered a great variety of multilateral tasks (incl. the “Hockey-Decathlon“), they progress to the program of simplified games 2 against 2 and 3 against 3. Here they can experiment and improve on the skills and basic tactical behaviours which they learnt before when they were exposed to a great variety of stimuli included in the dribble games, games for tackling, games for passing, controlling and shooting and multilateral games.

The players are always highly motivated in their training because they see the practise game orientated and not isolated from the competition as frequently observed in youth hockey.
